#306 STC's May Mania

I've signed-up to play in May Mania, a free, 4-round event that takes place on FICS, ICC, and WCL from April 28th thru May 26th.

If you'd like to do the same, join the STC Bunch and hurry! The entry deadline is 5:00 p.m. EDT tomorrow (21:00 GMT).

P.S. - I've chosen to play at World Chess Live where, at present, there are just 9 entrants in the tourney (the other servers have 29 & 54).

Remember all U.S. Chess Federation members are eligible for 6 free months there.

4/27 @ 12:20 a.m. : correction on the time control.... it will be G/40+10, not G/60.

#305 Final-Round Pairings

Barring byes, the pairings for the 3rd/final round of the Ellner Memorial will be :
  • Moldovan (1.5) - Kernighan (2.0)
  • Tomkovich (1.5) - Mangion (1.5)
  • Selling (1.0) - Carrelli (1.5)
  • Sokolosky (1.0) - Mazzillo (1.0)
  • Wojcio (0.0) - Renna (0.0)
  • Shiffman (0.0) - Vinson (0.0)

#304 Ellner Memorial - Round 2

Mark Kernighan leads after 2 rounds of the Irving Ellner Memorial Swiss; thanks to his win over Ed Selling and draws on the other top boards. Ian Mangion, Greg Tomkovich, Don Carrelli and I are a half-point back.

Here's all the action, including my very interesting game vs. Greg, in
java-replay and zipped PGN.

Notes to at least 1 other contest will follow in a few days.

#303 Pleasant Surprise

Earlier today, I found out that my USATE win against Steve Jesseph appeared in Sunday's (4/20) Newark Star-Ledger.

Since, I didn't submit the game, I'm doubly-honored that it was published. Unfortunately, wondering which partie was used made this cheap SOB buy the article!

Pete Tamburro was kind enough to say that 37.g4+! was "dandy" + "inspired"; and to not mention that 29.Re6? = was mistaken (29.Rh4 +/- was correct).

But he's wrong about 22.Rfe1 = being a "lapse". It was a fine move that set-up the 24.Nxd5! desperado.

Anyway, this time, he got the names & colors right! :-)

P.S. - I'm having problems uploading diagrams to Blogger at the moment. So, I'll add them to the story and post my notes tomorrow. Also, thanks to Greg Tomkovich for the tip.

4/24, 1:03 p.m. - Still can't upload diagrams but I've posted a java-replay and PGN file with full annotations to the Jesseph game and 2 easier USATE contests.
