A very strong, deep West Orange team (1943.60 average & ten 1800+ players) soundly defeated visting Kenilworth last night, 7-3.

I had the lone KCC victory and should've lost. NM Mark Kernighan, Geoff McAuliffe, Greg Tomkovich and Max Sherer had draws.

There were several missed upsets in the round 3 of the Kenilworth Summer Tournament.
  • Greg Tomkovich (-109) missed a chance to take over 1st and let me escape with a draw.

#331 KST 2008 - Round 2

I kept the early lead with a controlled win (just 1 rash move) against Lou Sturniolo's King's Indian Attack. Greg Tomkovich grabbed sole possesion of 2nd place with a victory over Bill Sokolosky and a draw. NM Mark Kernighan moved into clear 3rd, despite time-trouble, by beating Max Sherer.

Geoff McAuliffe, Mike Wojcio, Pete Cavaliere and Wayne Burmett joined to bring the number of players in the event to 17.

#328 KST 2008 - Round 1

Play in the 2008 Kenilworth Summer Tourney got underway last night with 1929-rated Anna Matlin (who finished = 2nd-3rd at the recent U.S. Amateur Championship!!), 2008 KCC U1800 Champ Ian Mangion, 2006 KCC U1800 Champ Bob Pelican and the club's newest member Lou Sturniolo (1448) among the field of 13.

#327 Summer Tourney Starts Tonight

The annual Kenilworth Summer Tournament starts tonight. Club Champion Mark Kernighan and 2006 KST-winner Greg Tomkovich are expected to be among those competing.

For those unfamiliar with the event, here are the rules we used last year plus the dates of this year's tourney :

1. Entry Fee : $5.00
2. The event will run from June 5 through August 28, 2008.
3. Time control : G/60

4. You may play anyone in the tournament. The first time you play an opponent, the lower-rated player gets White. In subsequent games against the same opponent, you will alternate colors.
5. You may not play the same opponent more than four times.
6. You get one point for a win, a half-point for a draw and zero for a loss.
7. You may play as many or as few games as you like. The more you play, the more points you can accumulate. Maximum 2 games per night.
8. The winner is the person who has the most points at the end of the tournament.
9. The prizes will be 60% for first place, 30% for second and 10% for third (rounded to the nearest dollar).
