G/60 B77 Sicilian Defense Dragon Variation Yugoslav Attack 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 I haven't seen Greg play the Dragon in years. In recent ones he's preferred the Pin Variation. 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 I don't remember Joseph ever playing a main line, let alone something this razor-sharp. 0-0 8.Qd2
8...Re8 (?! Goeller, ! Tomkovich) This preserves the Bg7 but 8...Nc6 does it better as 9.Nxc6 bxc6= 10.Bh6?! Bxh6 11.Qxh6 Qa5 /\ ...d5 favors Black. 9.Bc4 9.0-0-0± as in Camenares - Tomkovich : KST 6/22/2006 or 9.g4± 9...Nc6 10.Bb3 White has time for this retreat in the Sozin but here?... I don't know. 10.0-0-0 10...Bd7 11.Nxc6 As pointed-out at move 8, this trade usually benefits Black. 11.0-0-0 11...bxc6 12.0-0-0 Qa5
13.Bd4N 13.Bh6 as played in Margenstern - Lebreton : Clichy 2002 & Benedek - R. Moldovan : Calimanesti 2013. (No. The latter & I are not related.) 13...c5 14.Be3 14.Bxf6 Bxf6 15.Nd5 Qxd2+ 16.Rxd2 Bg7 17.c3= 14...Rec8 15.a3? 15.e5 c4 16.Bxc4 Rxc4 17.exf6 Bxf6 18.Qd5 Bxc3 19.Qxa8+ Kg7 20.Rd3 Qxa2 21.Rxc3 Rxc3 22.Qxa7 Qxa7 23.Bxa7= 15...Rab8? 15...Qa6-+ 16.Ba2? 16.e5 dxe5 17.Nd5 Qxd2+ 18.Rxd2 Nxd5 19.Bxd5 16...Rb6? 16...Qb6 17.b3 Qa6 18.Kb2 Ne8-+ 17.Bf4?? 17.e5! [] dxe5 18.Ne4 Qxd2+ 19.Rxd2 17...Rcb8 18.e5?
This allows a decisive attack. 18.Nd5 Qxd2+ 19.Kxd2 Nxd5 20.Bxd5 Rxb2 21.Rc1 with just a losing ending. 18...Rxb2! 19.exf6 What else? Rxa2! Threatening # in 2. 20.Nb1 This allows a crowning Q sac but there was no defense. Qxa3+! 21.Nxa3 Ra1+ 22.Nb1 Rbxb1# White is checkmated. Not a perfect game but still a crowd-pleaser. The winner's scoresheet had the ambiguous 22.RxN mate. So, he may have played 22...Raxb1# , instead.
