This event, which should end by 5:30 p.m., was designed to give Westfield's players a low-cost, 1-day alternative to the tournaments being run in Manhattan & Cherry Hill this week/weekend.

#1269 Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays to all my chess friends, acquaintances and readers.

#1268 Ending My Ties With Chess Mates

I have decided to end my association with Chess Mates Academy, effective January 1st.

The time had come. I last directed there on July 15th. Since then I've had to abort 6 tournaments due a lack of turnout and scrap 1 after a mass player exodus.

The latter was yesterday. It was an epic, tragic-comedy. 6 kids refusing to play in the scheduled event because they didn't want to face lower-rateds or their friends and an adult showing-up 20 minutes after all the others had gone.

I am getting old. I am tired and depressed. Trying to save the country will do that to you. So will watching the Alain Vigneault-coached New York Rangers.
