#261 Kenilworth Championship - Round 4

Open Section

NM Mark Kernighan held on to his half-step lead by smashing me in 18 moves. Ari Minkov kept pace with a forfeit win and Sherer-Carrelli was agreed drawn with White in a winning position.

U1800 Sections

The bye problems are worsening. With Pat Mazzillo having to withdraw, there are now 2 uneven groups. Perhaps the only solution is to combine them & change the format to a 12-player RR.

As for the games, Ian Mangion made up for his erased win (over Pat) by defeating Joe Renna, Mike Wojcio beat Bert Shiffman, Ted Mann won against Jim Cole & Joe Demetrick received a forfeit victory from Dmitriy Yampolskiy.

Here are the crosstables for the Open, U1800-A & U1800-B sections.

You can play thru both open section games
here or download them. The U1800s should follow in a few days.
  • annotated Cole-Mann uploaded 2/8 @ 9:39 p.m.
  • fritzed Shiffman-Wojcio added 2/11 @ 4:49 p.m.
  • fritzed Mangion-Renna added 2/15 @ 2:55 p.m.

Personally, I would love the opportunity to play a 12-player RR for the U-1800 setion, but perhaps we should combine the sections and play out a modified Swiss (maybe seven rounds), which would at least be fair to Ian Mangion since his game against Pat Mazillo wouldn't have to be "erased." (Of course, this scenario wouldn't happen in a Swiss tournament.)Of course, the decision is Geoff's, but does anyone else have any thoughts?

Glen,

Your swiss-idea is very interesting! It would end the bye-troubles and ensure that the U1800 ends in March.

Roach could play Agress & Yampolskiy (if the latter isn't removed) the next 2 weeks while the other 9 players sit.

Then everyone will have played 3 games & you guys could proceed from there.

some people will still need byes for later in the tournament. I know that I need byes for Feb. 21 and Feb. 28. How would that effect the swiss idea?

Jim,

If the rules allow, one can take half-point byes in a swiss. I imagine that the U1800 players would be allowed :

~ 2 byes if they had not taken any so far

~ 1 bye if they have already taken 1

~ No byes for anyone who took 2 or had taken 1 & was a late entry.

This would be consistent with the rules agreed to at the business meeting last December.

In the scenario I mentioned in yesterday's comment, you would not need a bye for Feb.21st but you would get a 1/2 point on Feb. 28th.

One point that I neglected to address was Ian Magnion having played 4 games. I think he'd have to get a zero-point bye on the 28th ; in what would be the 4th round.

At this point, though, we are all just speculating.

Thank you for the explanation, I like the idea of a double RR, however, I would, of course, support whatever is in the best interest of the club.
